Mark Neville

I am too sad to tell you

2006

16mm film, mute,  4 minutes, looped.

The title of this film recalls a photograph by Bas Jan Ader, an image which was dependant on the artifice and melodrama of the artist’s act of placing himself before the camera while crying. As with Ader’s piece, Neville is asking a question: ‘Am I sincere?’. Filming at very high-speed, in extreme close-up, the artist heightens this sense of melodrama, and makes reference to Surrealist representations of the eye.
